Recently I was asked to write an article that helped to provide some context around the effect of the impending new regulations and revised standards to commodity trading organisations. Although this is quite a complex area and to some degree a moving target, it will have a profound impact on the marketplace.
Although there are many areas to discuss, I focussed on the importance of forward curves: their financial, operational and strategic importance, with particular references to the new regulations - in particular the European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR) and Fair Value Accounting and the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) 13.
